The mathematical expression τ(n) is a function encountered in number theory. Also called the “divisor function,” when applied to a positive integer, τ(n) produces a result which is the number of positive divisors of that integer. For example: the numbers 1 and 3 are all of the possible positive divisors of 3, so τ(3) = 2. Likewise, 1, 2, 5 and 10 are all of the positive divisors of 10, so τ(10) = 4.
