The Framing of this Circle (1999) was composed for Brice Andrus,
principal horn of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. It was premiered by
him, along with violinist Lisa Yancich and pianist Cary Lewis, in May
1999 at a symposium of the International Horn Society, held at the
University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.
The work's four movements are a dramatic Allegro, a sedate Larghetto, a
lively Allegro and a final Allegro in mostly 13/8 meter.
The title, applied after the piece was written, is taken from a line in
Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus.
